The Illusion of Freedom: What Are You Really Chasing?

This morning, I woke up feeling uninspired.
So I went for a walk.
Down to the river. Barefoot.
Just like I used to do when I was a child.

And within minutes—I was glowing.
Alive. Connected. Free.

It reminded me of something I’ve come to know deep in my bones:
Freedom isn’t found in the things we chase.
It’s something we remember.

The Lie We’re Sold

Society sells us a version of freedom that looks like this:
Climb the ladder.
Get the job title.
Earn the salary.
Buy the house.
Own the things.
Then… you’ll finally be free.

I followed that path.
I made the money.
I climbed the ladder.
I was preparing to buy the house, I had the title, the lifestyle, the recognition.

From the outside, I had “made it.”
But on the inside?

I felt empty.
Disillusioned.
Disconnected from myself.
Lonely, stressed, burnt out.
Longing for something real.

And the cruel irony?
The more you “grow” in that system—the more you earn, the more you have—the less free you become.
You work more to sustain it.
You lose touch with your body, your joy, your relationships.
You become a slave to a life that promised happiness but delivers performance, pressure, and eventual collapse.

That’s not freedom.
That’s survival with a pretty mask.

The Real Cost of the Script

This so-called path to “freedom” leads to something else entirely:
Unfulfillment.
Depression.
Escapism.
Isolation.
And often, illness—because the body can’t keep up with a life that the soul didn’t choose.

There is nothing about that life that brings true joy, connection, or liberation.
It’s a cage dressed in gold.

A Different Kind of Freedom

But there is another way.

We can choose to unplug from the traditional script.
We can choose radical responsibility.
Radical authenticity.
And radical courage.

To ask ourselves:

  • What do I want to contribute to the world?

  • How do I want to spend my time?

  • What does success feel like to me?

  • What kind of life would feel true, free, and nourishing?

This is the kind of freedom no one can sell you.
You reclaim it.
You live it.

And it might look like walking barefoot by a river.
It might look like creating a business from your soul.
It might look like less money while you rebuild your life, but increase your joy.
Less stuff, but more meaning.
Fewer titles, but deeper truth.

A Remembrance

When I was a child, I knew freedom.
My mother—despite the hardship she endured—gave us something sacred:
The freedom to explore, to climb, to run barefoot, to swim in rivers and eat mangoes from our own trees.
To create worlds with stones and stories.
To be responsible for kittens.
To live fully.

She gave us the childhood she never had.
And in doing so, she planted the seed of something eternal.

That freedom is still in me.
And it’s in you too.

We don’t have to chase it.
We just have to remember.

So here’s the invitation:

Pause.
Breathe.
Ask yourself—what does freedom really mean to you?

Then choose, find the support, make the decision, change the course, build the safety and trust in yourself and your inner capacity to create the exact life you dream of.
Because you do have a choice.
And that choice can change everything.

If this spoke to something deep inside you—if you’re standing at the edge of change, craving more truth, more freedom, more alignment—
